I waited patiently for the Lord’s help; then he listened to me and heard my cry.
(Psalm 40:1-2)
Amid our grief, our sorrow, our wounded history, in our remembering, we can find strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. This, we will remember and must not forget.
Let us in honesty of heart seek the Lord’s renewing grace, to deepen our wisdom and our peace, and to equip us as instruments of his kindness. Through the truth of God’s promise in Christ Jesus, he will never leave us nor forsake us. This, we will remember and must not forget.
Let us remember the self-sacrifice of the men and women in our armed forces and the suffering of those who were not in uniform. Let us remember those who were our enemies whose homes and hearts are as bereft as ours. Let us remember the continuing grace of God, whose love holds all souls in life, and to whom none is dead, but all are alive for ever.
‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
at the going down of the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them.’
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
at the going down of the sun and in the morning,
we will remember them.’
Prayer
God of goodness and truth, we offer our broken hearts to you for healing. Grant us the humility to seek forgiveness and the will to practice it. Help us now to work for the increase of peace and justice and to show tolerance and open-mindedness towards those whose
character and customs differ from ours. And grant the people of the world may do your will and live in your Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
